Flood Protection Hydraulic Works & Water Resources Management Technology
Lab Web site

Description - Research Areas
The main research work of the laboratory of Flooding Protection Hydraulic Works & Water Resources Management Technology of the Department of Civil Engineering T.E. of Larissa is the applied research on flows in physical rivers, flood protection hydraulic works and water resources management using experimental and computational methods.  The research activity of the laboratory aims to investigate and promote the best practices on flood protection hydraulic works and integrated water resources management. Practically, the purpose of the laboratory is to obtain useful results that could support activities related to flood risk areas in rivers basins and water resources management in urban and rural areas. Moreover, the laboratory could offer services to select the appropriate training works and the essential technology of flood protection works.
Services to Third Parties
1. Services related to river training and flood protection works.
2.  New technologies and methods for river flood protection works.
3. Services related to water resources management.
4.  New technologies for water resources management.

Activities
1. Experimental simulation of free-surface flows (river flows) and of different flood protection hydraulic works.
2. Numerical simulation of free-surface flow conditions (river flows) and of different hydraulic works in order to prevent floods.
3. Water balance basin simulation

Research Equipment and Infrastructure
1. Two experimental open-channels with appropriate equipment in order to simulate open channel flows (rivers) and flood protection works.
2.  Computational models for numerical simulations of open channel flows (rivers) and flood protection works.
3. Computational models of water resources management.
4.  Current meter equipment.
5. Portable meteorological stations

Research projects
1.  Spatial mapping and estimation of hydrologic risk with emphasis on floods and droughts in urban and rural areas of Thessaly and their environmental impacts.
2.  11SYN_3_1913 “Water Resources Management of coastal Agricultural Environments-Resilience of climate change impacts” (Agroclima).
3.   Investigation of the impact of the climate change on river deltas. Case study: the delta of river Pinios (Thessaly, Greece)
